Murder at Avedon Hill Podcast Novel

Lord Avedon has a problem. Generations of Avedons have watched over Avedon Hill and controlled the only pass through the Lantis Mountains. Traditions are important to the Avedon family, but one tradition has tragically come to an end. Gretta Platt, Housemistress of Avedon Manor, has been murdered. A member of the Platt family has always served the Avedons as Housemistress-- until now. Only a handful of people live at Avedon Hill, and most are suspects. Arames Kragen, retired Aarronic Advisor and scholar of prophecy, arrives at the gates of Avedon Hill, hoping to gain access to the mountain pass. Lord Avedon is not in a giving mood, however. This is the story of Arames Kragen and his attempt not only to discover who killed Gretta Platt, but also to uncover the truth about a town that apparently has more secrets than inhabitants.

The final product should be around 45 episodes, with production lasting until the end of 2008. Due to the generous help of family, friends, and members of the tribe, MaAH has morphed, skirting the edge between straight read and audio drama, with over 30 guests adding their voices to the podcast.

I’ll be releasing the listener appreciation show as a special episode in the normal audio feed. If you have any MaAH or general questions for me to answer during the episode’s Q&A, please email me, send me an .mp3, or call the Caern Line (704) 315-5884.

I will be dropping some of that new media I was talking about tomorrow and Monday. And then we’ll be back to the regular podcast. I’m waiting on some audio, but as long as I get that we should be ready to roll on the 10th.

Happy Independence Day, everyone.

This re-enactment was recorded in February for a project still in the planning stages over at Podiobooks.com community website. I decided to release it here because… well, because I wanted to

Thank you to Nathan Lowell for his introduction at the beginning of this audio file. Be sure to check out his Golden Age of the Solar Clipper novels over at Podiobooks.com.

The image you see in iTunes is a cropped image from Peter F. Rothermel’s “Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses,” from 1851. The photograph of this painting is released on Wikimedia Commons as a public domain work.

I will be doing a live listener appreciation show on Sunday, July 6th. Please check out my page on stickam for more information on this show (and add me as a friend while you are at it!).

We are going to rush the Amazon charts on July 13th– not to help a podcast author land a choice book deal, but to show that the publishing industry continues to change… to show that a previously published DIY work, released in audio, print, and e-book formats, can find a new audience when released by an independent publisher. And that a new imprint such as Swarm Press can utilize this new model and reach heights on Amazon usually reserved for Crown, Scholastic and Bantam Books.

I mean, why the hell not?

Matthew Wayne Selznick’s Brave Men Run (the first podcast novel I ever listened to, and the reason I decided to podcast MaAH) is being published by Swarm Press and hits Amazon on Sunday, July 13th. Matthew is doing something very frakkin cool on that day. He is going to be doing a live webathon from 10 am - 5 pm Eastern time. Not only will he be talking about Brave Men Run, Amazon numbers, and generally losing his voice; he will also be reading new fiction set in his Sovereign Era universe… including a story by yours truly. In addition, you will hear stories by:

J.C. Hutchins (The “7th Son” trilogy)

Mur Lafferty (”Playing For Keeps”)

Nathan Lowell (The “Golden Age of the Solar Clipper” novels)

<itunes:summary>This is the last day you can qualify for the contest. For info on the contest, see the post specifically about this.

I'm putting this message into the feed because there are several people that have provided the feedback required for the contest, but have not sent me an email. Without that email you are not qualified for the contest drawing!

On a happy note, we are at 41 reviews on iTunes. Since we reached 40 reviews by July 1st, the prize pool has been increased to five items. Tomorrow at 2 pm Eastern I will be drawing names from the hat live on stickam. Stop by tomorrow at 2 and watch the fun! The five items that I will be giving away:

2 t-shirts from our MaAH spreadshirt store
2 signed copies of Murder at Avedon Hill
a signed copy of Expert Podcasting Practices for Dummies, signed by Evo Terra.

You still have time to send me that email (or to otherwise qualify, if you forgot about this until now).

Hey everyone. I just wanted to stop by and let you know what will be happening over the next two weeks.

I am stepping away from the production of the podcast for a few days, to finish a short story that you will hear more about after July 1st.

Our first MaAH contest is almost complete. At this moment there are 39 reviews on iTunes. If one more review appears before midnight on June 30th (my time), then the number of prizes in the prize pool will increase from two to four. Whatever the prize pool may be, on July 1st I will videotape the drawing of the winners and release that on stickam page. Good luck!!

On July 4th I will be releasing a special “And Now for Something Completely Different” short podcast episode. It will be a reading/re-enactment of Patrick Henry’s Give Me Liberty speech from March, 1775. I did this for a special project over at Podiobooks.com that hasn’t reached fruition at this time, so I’ve decided to release it here as well. It should completely confuse everyone listening to MaAH, but what the heck? It’s July 4th, after all!

On Sunday, July 6th, at 2 pm Eastern time, I will do a live broadcast on Stickam. It will be a listener appreciation episode, where I’ll play some of the wonderful voicemails from the Caern Line, talk about some of the emails I’ve received, and we’ll do another Q&A with any audience members that join in the fun.

I’m going to start releasing some art in the feed. Ever want to see a map of Avedon Hill? Of Avedon Manor? Of some of the tunnels under Avedon Hill? We’re going multi-media with MaAH. I hope you’re ready.

Chapter 25 will be released on July 10th.

This is going to be a lot of work. June was a great month for me and the podcast. I hope to carry that over into July, with your patience, and your support. Thanks!!

As some of you might have heard, I had a live event on Sunday to promote the release of Ep. 24, which is also the end of Part I of Murder at Avedon Hill. It was a live video reading of chapter 23, complete with sound effects, music, and guest voices. It was done using ustream, and probably due to my internet connection was a bit on the laggy side (the video was around 30 seconds behind the audio).

The next morning I re-recorded the event (without the Q&A for the 25 or so people that stuck around to the end) using stickam, which seemed to work much better. That video can be viewed on the new Stickam Video page.

If you have friends that have not tried MaAH, the video episode includes a lengthy (nearly spoiler-free) Story So Far by Leann Mabry. This is a good introduction to the novel, so spread the word!!

Care to finish your Father’s Day festivities with a live Murder at Avedon Hill event?! At 10 pm Eastern time (GMT -05:00) on Sunday, June 15th, I will be hosting a live video podcast event. I will be performing a live reading of Episode 24 (Chapter 23). For those that cannot attend, the audio version of ep. 24 will be released that same day.

To attend:

You can view the live event on the MaAH site on the Ustream Video page. For those that would like to use the more intuitive Ustream interface, watch the event at the MaAH Channel on Ustream.tv

Know someone that might like MaAH but hasn’t tried it out?

This event will be a great introduction to the podcast. We’ll begin the evening with a lengthy story so far, read by the one and only Leann Mabry. This should give new listeners what they need to understand what’s going on. After this I’ll be reading chapter 23, and as long as I can work out the logistics, this should include music, sound effects, and guest voices.

After the reading I will be taking questions from the audience (and from twitter). I’m looking forward to this, so please, join me if you can!
Time Zone Conversion: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/gmt-converter.htm

Just plug in 22:00 (10 pm) and GMT - 5 in the first two fields. Then chose your time zone, and click the PRESS HERE button.

On episode 22 I mentioned that I’m running a contest. The details are below, but there is one major change: the contest will run until the end of June, not the end of May.

What do you do?

Between now and June 30, submit a review at iTunes and/or leave a comment on The Caern Line (the voice line at 704-315-5884). If you do one or the other, you get one entry into the contest. If you do both, you get two entries.

Anyone that has previously left a review on iTunes or left me a voice mail is grandfathered into the contest.

But in either case (grandfathered or new), you only be officially entered if you send me an email with the subject line MaAH Contest #1, with your name and email address, plus a description of what you did (name on the review or date you left a voice mail). That way I can contact you if you win.

What do you get?

On July 1st, 2008 I will take all the entries and draw a winner (on video). That person will win a t-shirt of their choice from the official MaAH Spreadshirt store. Also, if I get more than 20 reviews on iTunes before the end of June, I will give away schwag to multiple entrants (prizes T.B.A.).

As traditional publishing gets increasingly harder to crack, authors are finding non-traditional ways to build an audience. Our purpose is to explore the latest non-traditional pathways that authors are taking to reach bestseller status.

This should be extremely insightful, and afterwards, you’re invited to join us for food and drinks at TK Tripps, adjacent to Quail Ridge Books.”

My note: I hope everyone in the Raleigh area will come to Quail Ridge Books, one of the best independent bookstores in North Carolina, to see me… or at least to see the great Mur Lafferty. Thanks to Stacey Cochran for putting this panel together and hosting the event.

A promo for the event will appear in Ep. 21. It is also located on the sidebar!! Anyone that has a podcast, please play it!

I’m postponing the ooVoo video chat event until March 24th - 27th. I have succumbed to the sinus infection that my wife and daughters have been fighting for the last week–not fun. Ep. 19 will be released before next weekend, as long as my voice holds out. If you already know you are interested in participating in the video chat, drop me an email.

I’m going to be adding a couple of pages to the site over the next few days. I asked Shira Kammen if she would mind if I pimp her great music (to which she replied “That would be great!”), so I’m adding a page called The Music. I’m also adding a page for some of the podcast related web comics I’m creating over at bitstrips.com.

Look for these pages to appear soon. Have a great St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow, everyone!
