One thing I finished recently that I’ve been working on here and there for over a year is a video promo. I can do a few things in Flash but nothing I was putting together for MaAH was appealing to me. Enter the website Animoto.com. With animoto you upload your photos, drawings, etc., add text, add music, and then it spits out a video for you. The only drawback is you have no real control over the transitions used, so your only recourse if you don’t like how something looks is to re-render the whole thing and see if it turns out the way you want it.

After a lot of tries I came up with the video you see here.  If you like it, please embed it, promote it, put the file on your site or in your podcast feed, etc. I’d be honored.

If you want to embed it, please let me know and I’ll send you the code. If you don’t want to email me, I have a version of the video on youtube that you can grab, but the video doesn’t look as good on youtube (you can make the video look better when embedding though by changing the resolution of the video).

This is the first time I’m placing a video in my feed. Hopefully no one will have issues.

Here is a .pdf of a map of the town. It was created by snikle, one of the founders of Four Ugly Monsters, a site dedicated to virtual gaming tables such as Fantasy Grounds, Battlegrounds: RPG Edition, and MapTool.

The map was created for an RPG supplement that I was working on with snikle and devinnight (the artist that created the icons of the Children seen in the novel and on this site). I stepped away from Four Ugly Monsters (I was a founder as well) to concentrate on writing (and on the podcast). These are two great guys, and some of the extra content you’ll see over the next few weeks will be all thanks to their hard work.

A couple of areas previously mentioned and/or visited in the novel but not marked on the map: the Circle is the group of yellow buildings in the center of town; the Estates are the yellow buildings on the right side of the map.

At the same time Arrin remains in town, and with Cletus’s help discovers some interesting links between Gretta and Hemming the Baker.

Caern Vocabulary

• cyke – unit of time. There are 20 cykes in a day.
• lunas – unit of time. There are forty days in one lunas. A year is made up of ten lunas. Lunas is used as both singular and plural.
• Caern has a 40 day lunar month. The year is 400 days. Once every six years the Caern calendar adds an additional day, called the Festival of Tears (named for the tears Az shed creating his ten Children). There are ten months in the year, called lunas. There are four seasons, each lasting 100 days.

A great day for podcasting, and a perfect day for the one and only J.C. Hutchins.

J.C. Hutchins, author of the successful “7th Son” podcast novel trilogy, has accepted a book deal to publish “7th Son: Descent,” the series’ debut novel. The thriller is scheduled for a 2009 U.S. spring/summer release by St. Martin’s Press.

“7th Son” is the story of seven strangers who have been brought together after the recent assassination of the U.S. president. The men discover that they are human clones, with identical childhood memories. These “John Michael Smiths” have been assembled to catch the man who murdered the president. Their target? Their progenitor, the original John Michael Smith, code-named “John Alpha.”

Hutchins is widely-known as one of the vanguard authors in a growing genre of free online audiobooks — also called “podcast novels ” or “podiobooks.” These novels are often read and recorded by the author, and are promoted online in podcasts and web blogs. “Podnovelists” like Hutchins leverage these new technologies — and the ubiquity of iPods and other portable devices — to find audiences for their work.

I wasn’t close to Joe Murphy, but I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Joe at Dragon*Con:

I first spotted Joe attending one of the podcast sessions at Dragon Con and I sat down near him and introduced myself when the session was over. I had written him an email about their podcast discussion of Dune, and and he remembered my email and we chatted for fifteen minutes about the Kick Ass Mystic Ninjas, how they came up with their topics, etc. The next session started and I moved up to the front of the room to listen in.

And then later that night at a party Joe came up to me and began our conversation anew. It was just how Joe Murphy was. If you were a listener, you were part of his extended family, immediately, no questions asked.
