Here’s the first promo for the podcast version of Murder at Avedon Hill. It’s 2 1/2 minutes in length.
A “thank you thank you thank you” to Leann Mabry of the Tag in the Seam podast for reading the part of Gretta Platt in the promo.
The music in the promo:
I hope you like it.

Note: this post was originally added on January 7th. Just changed the date to move it to the top of the page… I wonder what this will do to my podcast feed…

I went to Atlanta last week to deliver training to a group I support at my full-time job. It mainly was an excuse to visit Leann and Clair. Leann Mabry is the host of one of my favorite podcasts, Tag in the Seam. We had fun recording nothing in particular, working up a skit for one of her future episodes, and it gave me the opportunity to pick Clair’s brain a bit on using a mixer.
Leann is the voice of Gretta in my promo, and will be reading two parts (Gretta and one of the two vital female characters later in the book) in my podcast novel.
It was great to meet Leann and Clair (we were at the same parties and podcast sessions at Dragon*Con, but we never officially met) and it simply reinforced what I have been telling people ever since Dragon*Con… podcasters are simply the best group of people you will every hope to meet.
Some photos…

I’ll share the longer version of the story on next week’s first T-minus podcast, but a while back I got an idea for a skit for J.C. Hutchins, playing on the dangerous contortions one might go through to imitate the Kilroy 2.0 clone voice. I wrote a fake PSA and several podcasters agreed to play along.
Head on over to J.C. Hutchins 7th Son website to listen to the short version of the skit, which he dropped into his podcast feed on Friday. The long version of it is there as well, in the Download Center area of his site. Again I’ll be playing a version of it in next week’s podcast, and will talk more about the great podcasters that contributed their time and energy during the Christmas holiday on this silly little creation.

I wrote a short story back in October. It’s about meeting Scott Sigler, author of Earthcore, Ancestor, Infection, and his current podcast novel, “The Rookie.” The story starts out autobiographical, but it takes a horrific (yet fun) turn that I thought might appeal to Scott and his fans.
I sent the soft copy to a couple of podcasters and received positive feedback… and J.C. Hutchins liked it enough to agree to ”play” Scott Sigler in the podcast version of the story. I sent the audio version of the story to Scott in November… and today he dropped it in his feed!!
The name of the story is Death, Taxes, and Scott Sigler. I’ll be playing a version of it in my own feed probably next week, but if you can’t wait, please download it from Scott’s site and give it a listen (and if you like it, please comment about it on Scott’s site).
Ah, a good day…

I recently joined Christiana Ellis (author of Nina Kimberly the Merciless) on her very fun podcast called “Hey Want to Watch a Movie?”. “Hey Want to Watch a Movie?” is a podcast where Christiana skypes in three or four people and they all watch a movie, providing listeners with a fan version of a director’s commentary.
Along with Christiana, I joined Steve Eley (Escape Pod, Podholes) and Neil (the Borderline podcast) to watch one of my favorite all-time movies, The Princess Bride.
So if you have a copy of The Princess Bride and want to play along, download the podcast from Christiana’s site. It was a lot of fun for me and I hope to do this again real soon.

I got my new microphone (MXL V63M), shockmount, mic stand, and filter today. Of course I haven’t received the mixer I ordered, so I can’t actually do anything with it… except admire the hell out of it
I’ll be traveling to Atlanta next week and hope to get a lesson on working with a mixer from Clair High and Leann Mabry (and hopefully play some Killer Bunnies).
NOTE (1/28/07): My mixer arrived last week and now I fully understand how completely horrible my house is for recording audio. I think I’ll be recording MaAH in a walk-in closet in my bedroom

Been playing around with Word Press most of the morning. I decided to move my entire site onto the WordPress site. I had been vascillating back and forth about it, but this will turn out well, since the editing of themes isn’t going to be as difficult as I had originally thought.
One thing that hasn’t worked well is importing my posts from blogger. I made the mistake (not knowing it at the time) of moving up to the new blogger (integrated with google), which broke the import mechanism into WordPress. I attempted to import from .rss, with very limited results (the posts were moved over, sans title and text. So I will be spending some time over the next few days copying and pasting into the WordPress posts.

Mur Lafferty (the Mighty One) was named to Podonomics Top 10 Savvy Women in Podcasting for 2006, for her two podcasts, her work on TotPM, etc. etc. etc.
I don’t understand how they missed her essay on Wingin’ It #75 - Live at Dragon*Con, but hey, they got most of her achievements in the article

We moved our (my wife is a web designer who maintains several websites for customers) websites to DreamHost.com last night. Um… how about 2 TB of bandwidth, and we paid less than $100.00 for two years? Hell yeah!
My first order of business was installing WordPress and Podpress. I’m trying out different themes until I find one we’ll further modify to make it relate to the novel.
For those of you just learning about me, I’ve written a novel that I will be podcasting here. I’m performing final edits of the novel, which will be available through Lulu.com. Once I’ve uploaded the novel, I’ll begin the podcast here. My main site for the book itself is http://pgholyfield.com (EDIT: Since yesterday I’ve decided to use this site for everything… both for the novel and the podcast).
I’m contemplating whether or not I want to move over my blogs from blogger. I’m leaning towards no… although if the process is as simple as it appears, I might move posts over and then delete most of the ones I don’t want/need here.
For the last six months I’ve been learning the ins and outs of podcasting. I’ve contributed several promos, skits, and short stories to several podcasts out there, in order to learn Adobe Audition and get my name out there. I’ve made a lot of friends along the way and will post about them here from time to time.
I will be recording two or three T-Minus podcasts and posting them here before the podcast novel begins. I want to make sure the feed is correct and things are moving before starting the novel. Plus I’m still waiting on some sound equipment before I start recording the novel chapters.
More later. Welcome and I hope you make Murder at Avedon Hill an oft-visited site!
