I recorded this a couple of years ago and like to pull it back out for new listeners around July 4th.

On March 23, 1775, at St. John’s Henrico Parish Church in Richmond, Patrick Henry spoke to the House of Burgesses. His speech changed the minds and hearts of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and became a beacon of freedom for all of America.

Happy Independence Day, everyone.

MaAH Special Edition: Interview with Howard Tayler

Balticon was wonderful–best convention I’ve ever attended. One of the many reasons for this (which I’ll detail in an upcoming audio update) was the forty-five minutes I got to spend with Howard Tayler. Howard is the creator of the Schlock Mercenary web-comic, a host on the Writing Excuses podcast, and the Artist Guest of Honor at Balticon this year.

We talked about storytelling within the medium of ‘sequential art,’ Writing Excuses, pacing within different mediums, and a little about the talk Howard gave at Balticon on education and on becoming a better creator, no matter the medium.

Thanks to Howard for being patient with someone that obviously had less than a good grasp of web-comic terminology (I referred to panels as boxes throughout the interview ).

Tales of the Children – A Land of Caern short story podcast anthology presented by P.G. Holyfield

Tonight, as we approach the book launch of Murder at Avedon Hill, we have a Tales of the Children story written and produced by Dan Absalonson. A few weeks ago Dan asked if he could produce the audio for his own podcast, and knowing I wouldn’t be getting to his story for several months, I said “Go for it!” For a first audio podcast episode, Dan did a wonderful job with the production. Big Axe, Little Hands is a fun story about one of the smaller races of Caern, and an incarnation of one of the Children of Az we haven’t seen in audio form thus far.

A Wake for “The Seanachai”

My good friend Patrick McLean over at The Seanachai (How to Succeed in Evil, Flinchy and the Mexican Show Truck) is doing his last episode of his podcast live on Stickam (link to the show will be posted as soon as I get it). The live show will be on Wednesday, March 24, at 9:00 pm Eastern time.

As a good Irishman (at least a 1/4 of me, anyways), I’ll be helping him bring The Seanachai to a fitting end. Today we have our next “Behind the Scenes” episode leading up to the print release of Murder at Avedon Hill. This is Pt.2 of my interview with Gabrielle Harbowy, my editor with Dragon Moon Press. Gabrielle was also the author of the first Tales of the Children story, “Swimming Lessons.”

Excuse the low sound quality of this episode. We recorded in a room at the Atlanta Hilton during Dragon*Con and there was a lot of noise that didn’t clean up very well. But it is listenable, and the interview itself turned out great.

On October 7th Patrick McLean and I did a live reading of his Tales of the Children short story, “The Old God and the Sea.” After the reading we did a Q&A with Chooch (Chooch was on skype).

To make the video a little more fun, especially since Patrick’s story was a bit of a comedy, I’ve added some pop-up elements that hopefully add some humor to the video, and it also helps those watching the video understand what was going on in the Stickam chat room before the reading and during the Q&A.

This video is Pt. 2 (the Q&A). I tried to include something for everyone in this video. Give it a watch and see what I mean.

Murder at Avedon Hill a Parsec Awards Finalist!

Murder at Avedon Hill has been named as a finalist in the 2009 Parsec Awards, in the category Best Speculative Fiction Audio Drama (Long Form including Independents).

From the Parsec Awards website:

The Parsec Awards are dedicated to rewarding excellence in various aspects of Speculative Fiction Podcasting. The Parsec Award is available for Sci-fi & Fantasy Original Content, podiobooks and a variety of other categories dealing with the new frontiers of Portable Media. The 4th annual Parsec Awards will be held at the Dragon*con convention held September 4 through September 7, 2009.

Before I started this project I attended the first Parsec Awards at D*C in 2006. From that moment it became one of my goals… to one day be a Parsec Awards finalist. To have MaAH as a finalist in the Audio Drama category is a great validation of the hard work that I and so many other people put into this podcast.

Thanks to the fans that nominated Murder at Avedon Hill in the first place, and thanks to the awards committee and others that felt MaAH belonged on the short list of podcasts in this category. The other nominees:

As you know I love Chris Lester’s work on the MCP podcast (damn him), and Rich Sigfrit, the driving force behind Mr. Adventure, played two roles in MaAH (Herrjarr and Kell). Mr. Adventure is a lot of fun and you should check it out.

And Mur… she is simply the best.

The only nominee I am not familiar with is The Leviathan Chronicles (other than their great promo I believe I played on my podcast). But if nothing else, check out their website. It’s frakkin’ awesome! I’ll be listening to it before D*C, to be sure.

A lot of my friends in the podcasting world are Parsec finalists this year as well. Too many to list here, but I’m really looking forward to the ceremony to see who wins!

Murder at Avedon Hill Video Promo

Hello folks. Sorry I’ve been away for a while. I’ve been battling computer viruses, conducting a job search, and dealing with family stuff over the last few weeks and episode 39 was moved lower on the priority list for a time. I am back at editing now, so expect another audio episode soon.

One thing I finished recently that I’ve been working on here and there for over a year is a video promo. I can do a few things in Flash but nothing I was putting together for MaAH was appealing to me. Enter the website Animoto.com. With animoto you upload your photos, drawings, etc., add text, add music, and then it spits out a video for you. The only drawback is you have no real control over the transitions used, so your only recourse if you don’t like how something looks is to re-render the whole thing and see if it turns out the way you want it.

After a lot of tries I came up with the video you see here. If you like it, please embed it, promote it, put the file on your site or in your podcast feed, etc. I’d be honored.

If you want to embed it, please let me know and I’ll send you the code. If you don’t want to email me, I have a version of the video on youtube that you can grab, but the video doesn’t look as good on youtube (you can make the video look better when embedding though by changing the resolution of the video).

This is the first time I’m placing a video in my feed. Hopefully no one will have issues.

A map of Avedon Hill – Ever wonder where some of the businesses and homes are in Avedon Hill?

Here is a .pdf of a map of the town. It was created by snikle, one of the founders of Four Ugly Monsters, a site dedicated to virtual gaming tables such as Fantasy Grounds, Battlegrounds: RPG Edition, and MapTool.

The map was created for an RPG supplement that I was working on with snikle and devinnight (the artist that created the icons of the Children seen in the novel and on this site). I stepped away from Four Ugly Monsters (I was a founder as well) to concentrate on writing (and on the podcast). These are two great guys, and some of the extra content you’ll see over the next few weeks will be all thanks to their hard work.

A couple of areas previously mentioned and/or visited in the novel but not marked on the map: the Circle is the group of yellow buildings in the center of town; the Estates are the yellow buildings on the right side of the map.
